Whereas, Milt "The Judge" Hinton is ranked as one of the top five bass players who has ever lived, having led a stellar career that has included a 15-year touring engagement with Cab Calloway and hundreds of concerts and recordings with artists as diverse as Duke Ellington, Bing Crosby, Barbara Streisand, Billy Holiday and countless others; and
Whereas, Milt Hinton, a longtime resident of Queens, "the home of jazz," was declared a "National Living Legend" by the Smithsonian Institute and has received numerous national and international awards; and
Whereas, While on the road, Milt Hinton always carried his camera and became a highly recognized photographer, so that his photos on the road and in recording sessions became a historical record of who's who in the jazz and music world from the 1930's through the 1970's; and
Whereas, Milt Hinton has authored two outstanding books, "Bass Line: The Stories and Photographs of Milt Hinton," by Milt Hinton and David Berger and "Over Time: The Jazz Photographs of Milt Hinton, David Berger and Holly Maxson;" and
Whereas, In 1996, the Discovery Channel aired a biographical story on Milt Hinton and in September, 1998, the New York Times ran an extensive story about his life and career; and
Whereas, The Council of the City of New York recognizes the extraordinary life and accomplishments of Milt Hinton and looks forward to fulfilling the numerous requests to continue his legacy in the Borough of Queens; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That the Council of the City of New York salutes the great jazz bassist Milt Hinton and confers upon him the title of "Outstanding Jazz Bassist of his Time" in honor of his 90th birthday on June 23, 2000.
