Resolution congratulating the citizens of London on having installed their first directly elected Mayor and their first Assembly.

By Council Members Harrison, Malave-Dilan, Henry, Marshall, Michels, Nelson and Abel; also Council Members O'Donovan, Spigner and Fiala
Whereas, On May 4, 2000 London voters went to the polls and for the very first time directly elected a Mayor and 25 candidates from four political parties to become London's first Assembly; and
Whereas, Lynne Featherstone, sister-in-law of New York City Councilwoman Julia Harrison, was elected as a member of the London Assembly and is a member of Mayor Ken Livingston's cabinet; and
Whereas, The Mayor is charged with creating and implementing strategies for London and the Assembly has the statutory duty to scrutinize such strategies and put forward proposals to the Mayor and also has the power to veto the Mayor's budget; and
Whereas, Lynne Featherstone, a Liberal Democrat, chairs the Transportation Committee, has been appointed a member of the New Metropolitan Police Authority for London and for the Fire Department, as well as serving as the Liberal Democratic spokesperson for Health in the Assembly; and
Whereas, Mayor Ken Livingston is charged with creating and implementing key strategies for London, which include the areas of transport, economic development, waste management and bio-diversity, now therefore, be it
Resolved, That the Council of the City of New York hereby congratulates the citizens of London on having installed their first directly elected Mayor and their first Assembly, and be it further
Resolved, That the members of the Council of the City of New York extend collegial greetings to the 25 members of London's first Assembly and to Mayor Ken Livingston and be it finally
Resolved, That the members of the Council of the City of New York extend special greetings and congratulations to Lynne Featherstone on her election to the august body of the London Assembly.
