Title: A Local Law to amend the New York city charter, in relation to the outreach and meeting schedule of the office of food policy

Summary: This bill seeks to codify the Mayor’s Office of Food Policy’s (MOFP) outreach and meeting schedule. This law would mandate MOFP to meet with agencies, community based organizations, community leaders and other stakeholders that focus on food policy issues every 3 months. These discussions would no longer be limited to the food policy plan. Furthermore, MOFP would have to perform outreach to these organizations every 3 months. The bill seeks to enhance communication between different interested parties, and ensure that food policy issues are addressed in a timely manner.

A Local Law to amend the New York city charter, in relation to the outreach and meeting schedule of the office of food policy

 

Be it enacted by the Council as follows:

 

 

Section 1. Paragraphs 3 and 4 of subdivision c of section 20-i of the New York city charter are amended to read as follows:

3. Perform quarterly outreach to food policy advocates, community based organizations, academic institutions, and other entities to advance the city’s food policy; [and]

4. Support initiatives that are designed to promote access to healthy food, including but not limited to initiatives designed to promote healthy food access for communities that have historically had inequitable access to healthy foods due to economic, racial, or environmental factors [.] ; and

§ 2. Subdivision c of section 20-i of the New York city charter is amended by adding a new paragraph 5 to read as follows:

5. Hold quarterly meetings, with agencies, community based organizations, community leaders and other stakeholders that focus on issues including but not limited to food policy plan, food equity, food justice, and food insecurity.  

§ 3. Section 20-m of the New York city charter, as added by local law number 164 for the year 2021, and section 20-n of such charter are redesignated sections 20-n and 20-o respectively.

§ 4. This local law takes effect immediately.
